The first week of the National Inventors’ Week (NIW) Webinar Series has explored on the topics on the ease of doing business in the new normal and motivating inventors to create innovative products for the new normal and beyond on 03 and 06 November 2020, respectively.
Co-organized by the Filipino Inventors Society (FIS), Inc. and the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI), the webinar series sets the mood for inventors and would-be inventors to create inventions and innovations in the advent of the new normal.
It also intends to streamline the procedures of online transactions in making dealings easier particularly in filing for registrations or requesting for funding support from appropriate institutions.

“The pandemic has drastically changed not only the way people live but more so, the way people perceive and understand the importance of public health as the freedom we used to enjoy has temporarily been imposed with limitations in terms of physical movements and mass gatherings,” said DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Rowena Cristina L. Guevara during the Opening Ceremonies.
Initially conducted every third week of November, the NIW has resulted to shifting the celebration to the virtual platform as response to certain restrictions pertaining to the crisis.
“With the help of our holistic Programs in technology promotion, transfer, and commercialization, every inventor is almost assured that there is a corresponding assistance in whichever phase they currently are in the commercialization pathway, may it be in conceptualization up to marketing,” added Undersecretary Guevara.
Among the DOST-TAPI flagship programs for inventors include the protection of intellectual property, pilot and market testing, prototype development, laboratory testing and analyses, special loaning facility with the Land Bank of the Philippines, and promotional activities including invention contests and exhibits.
DOST Secretary Fortunato T. De La Peña emphasized the significance of digitalization especially in times of crisis and urged every inventor to consider equipping themselves with software and applications to cope with the changing innovation ecosystem.
The first webinar series featured the presentations of Deputy Director General for Legal Ernesto V. Perez of the Anti-Red Tape Authority and Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Jose Maria A. Concepcion of Go Negosyo.
Atty. Perez reported on the salient points of the law in terms of coverage, prescribed processing time, and automatic approval, among others in reference to the Republic Act 11032 or the Anti-Red Tape Act of 2007 while Mr. Concepcion stressed how the micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs survive the threat brought by the pandemic to their business.
The second webinar series which focused on inspiring inventors featured resource speakers in the persons of Mr. James Bryan Camacho, inventor of the adaptive mobility crutch, Mr. Lyle Christian Herbosa, inventor of the MYKL Kiti-Kitix Killing Agent, and Mr. Horacio Freires of COVID Global Solutions.
